CONSTRUCTION TECHNIQUES

In today's society, cheaper and faster seems to be the way of the world. There are many stores that sell lesser quality, mass produced furniture made from inexpensive materials. Many pieces on the market today are made from mostly sawdust and plastics. Few contain any amount of real wood. Often times, this type of product will only last a short time.

Old World Furniture believes that it doesn't have to be this way. We get the name "Old World" because our products are constructed with the same materials and techniques that were used by master craftsmen of the past. Many of the historical pieces made by those craftsmen have lasted for centuries. In the same tradition, even with modest care, our pieces will last for future generations to enjoy and admire.

MATERIALS

Our projects use premium solid boards wherever possible. This ensures the greatest beauty and historical authenticity. Although this lumber costs far more than particle board, MDF, or veneer plywood, commonly used in lesser furniture, our results demonstrate the distinction of prime materials.

Most of our pieces feature one of three finishes. These include a traditional wax, hand rubbed oil, or polyurethane. Long before today's chemicals were available, the masters protected their work with oils and waxes.

Old World Furniture uses a hand blended wax that creates a similar patina to that of centuries old museum pieces. This unique finish has left more than one patron questioning the age of their new piece of furniture. A closely guarded secret, this finish cannot be found on any other modern pieces.

Many of the smaller items are finished in oil. This finish accentuates the natural grains of the wood and allows the wood texture to be felt. After each layer of oil has soaked into the wood, the piece is rubbed with a cloth to remove any excess surface oil. For those wishing to match one of our replicas to their own furniture, a modern polyurethane finish is also available.

TECHNIQUES

While machines are used for the basic stock preparation and cutting, hand tools are used to refine the critical joints as necessary for perfect, close tolerance fits. All exposed surfaces are carefully hand sanded. This level of craftsmanship assures lasting durability and exquisite beauty not available from mass production.

Mortise and tendon joints are used on stress bearing joints wherever possible. Many of the pieces also have the joints pegged for additional strength. These joints will remain tight even if the glue were to fail. In fact, with these construction techniques, glue is really optional. The Glastonbury Chair is constructed without any glue, nails, or screws. It is assembled in the historic tradition with pegged mortises and tendon joints.

One of the features that sets our furniture apart is the carving. Modern furniture has all but eliminated the beauty of carving. Many modern pieces simulate carving through the use of castings made of plastics or composite materials. Old World Furniture's carving is faithful to the traditional methods, that of a skilled carver with a wood hammer and a chisel. Whether it's a lamb's tongue or a fleur de lis, nothing shows off your unique piece like real wood carving.
