The Glastonbury chair was made for John Arthur
Thorne, a monk and the last treasurer of Glastonbury Abbey, some time
before 1539.
The chair is made from solid oak, one of the oldest
and most durable woods used in the Middle Ages. It is a joined chair,
which is constructed according to the art of the joyner—all the joints are
hand filled without the use of any nails, screws, or glue. Allowances are
made for the stresses of seasonal dimensional changes.
Carving is applied with chisel and wooden mallet. It is finished with
hand rubbed poly-urethane.
